‘Tsubame-Tsuiki’ Copperware is a metalwork technique originating from Tsubame, Niigata during the mid-Edo period, using copper extracted from Mt. Yahiko. ‘Tsuiki’ is the hand-hammering technique, consisting of thousands of meticulous strikes to create a resilient, strong, texturized, and shiny finish.
Fuukidou was founded by Mr. Fujii in 1945 in Tsubame-city, and is currently practiced by the father and son duo representing the 3rd generation.
The technique has been designated a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1981, and is considered a national treasure.
